Coffin cubicles zijn een nachtmerrie voor iedereen met claustrofobie

Als je claustrofobisch bent is dit, naast levend begraven worden, waarschijnlijk één van je grootste nachtmerries. Door de populatie van zo’n 7,5 miljoen en amper beschikbare grond is het een ware hel om een huis te vinden in Hong Kong. Daardoor hebben ze de mensonterende coffin cubicles bedacht waar VN onderzoek naar doet.

Met zijn fotoserie Trapped laat Benny Lam ons een kijkje nemen in die krappe hokken die voor zo’n 200.000 mensen als huis fungeert. Ze koken, plassen, poepen, eten en slapen in een ruimte die waarschijnlijk niet veel groter is dan jouw kledingkast.

“You may wonder why we should care, as these people are not a part of our lives”, schrijft Benny op zijn Facebookpagina. “They are exactly the people who come into your life every single day: they are serving you as the waiters in the restaurants where you eat, they are the security guards in the shopping malls you wander around, or the cleaners and the delivery men on the streets you pass through. The only difference between us and them is their homes. This is a question of human dignity.”
