Wie kijk er nou niet naar de sterren ‘s nachts. Het blijft intrigeren. Samen met je geliefde keek je naar het oneindige hemelplafond hopende dat er een ster valt, zodat je kan wensen dat jullie voor altijd bij elkaar blijven. Het was toch een gezellige tijd daar, met je tweede ex. Stiekem zou je de de ruimte weleens van dichtbij willen bekijken, deze kans is helaas voor weinig mensen grijpbaar. Neerlands trots André Kuipers vertelt regelmatig zijn boeiende ruimteverhalen in theaterzalen. In november staat hij in de Ziggo Dome. Om je een kijkje in de keuken te geven, heeft ruimtestation ISS een Instagram-account opgezet. Wij hebben de mooiste plaatjes voor je uitgezocht. Zo ben je er toch nog een beetje bij.

Onderzoek in de ruimte

In de jaren ’90 waren de Amerikanen opzoek naar internationaal steun voor een gezamenlijk ruimtestation. Ze vonden deze steun in landen als Nederland, Brazilië, Canada, Japan, België en nog een aantal Europese landen. Zo’n 15 landen werken in totaal samen om onderzoek te doen in de ruimte. De onderzoeken gaan door tot in ieder geval 2020, vermoedelijk blijft het station dan nog tot 2028 in de ruimte hangen. Wil je nou meer weten over de ruimte? "Sunrise crashes an aurora party over the southern hemisphere," said astronaut Ricky Arnold (@astro_ricky) of the image he snapped from the International Space Station. Auroras are one of the many Earthly phenomena the crew of the space station observe from their perch high above the planet. The dancing lights of auroras provide spectacular views, but also capture the imagination of scientists who study incoming energy and particles from our Sun. Auroras are one effect of such energetic particles, which can speed out from the Sun both in a steady stream called the solar wind or from giant eruptions known as coronal mass ejections or CMEs. After a trip toward Earth that can last three days, the solar particles and magnetic fields cause the release of particles already trapped near Earth, which in turn trigger reactions in the upper atmosphere in which oxygen and nitrogen molecules release photons of light.
